Where we have come from

CBM was formerly known as Christian Blind Mission International or CBMI.


1908  
Pastor Ernst J. Christoffel opened the first home in Malatia, Turkey, for people who were blind, hearing impaired or had a physical disability.

1925  
A school for people who were blind was opened in Tabriz, Iran.

1955  
Death of Pastor Christoffel in Isfahan, Iran, at the age of 78.

1963  
CBMI began ophthalmic work in Afghanistan, and shortly afterwards, in Iran.

1967  
CBMI extended its ministry to the African continent with projects in Ethiopia, Kenya and Tanzania.

1973  
Expansion of CBMI's work to South America (Peru) and extension of our ministry to people with physical and intellectual disabilities and also to those who were hearing impaired.

1983  
CBMI opened its Australian office in Kew, Victoria.

1989  
Recognition of CBMI as a non-governmental organisation officially related to the World Health Organisation (WHO).

1998  
CBMI celebrated its 90th anniversary since Ernst Christoffel set out for Malatia.

1999  
CBMI, together with the World Health Organisation, launch the global initiative to eliminate preventable blindness: VISION 2020.

2004  CBMI (Australia) relocated to Box Hill, Victoria.
2007  Name change to CBM Australia.
