You can make the world accessible for all

Did you know that 10% of the world’s population live with a disability?

Accessibility doesn’t stop with building more wheelchair ramps.

Attitudes need to change so that all people can reach their potential. Laws need to change so that people with disability are not disadvantaged. Information needs to be accessible to those with a print or learning disability.

Here's how you can be active

In Your School

Do you know anyone with a disability? Talk to them.

  • Be polite and avoid asking personal questions about their disability
  • Be patient
  • Put yourself in their shoes

Test your classmates’ and school's accessibility and present your results!
   Remember to include:

Ask the Council for a list of contacts for a local disability service to speak at your school.

Represent people with disability. Join your Local Council’s Youth Advisory Committee.

If you know someone who is having difficulty, tell one of your teachers, parents or a youth worker. Make sure they aren’t forgotten.

In Your Church

Audit your church’s accessibility and present it to Church Council.

Remember to include:

Suggest to your Minister to consider hosting a guest speaker to speak on disability.

Do you have Hearing Assistance installed?

Look at Church Notices, Signs, Websites and Publications.

  • Is the text BIG enough?
  • Is it easy to read?

Does your church provide any resources - audio or print - for people who are immobile?

With your friends or small group, arrange a morning tea for people with disability and carers.

Run a Bible Study on Jesus, Healing and Disability. Watch the film Molokai for ideas!

In Your Workplace

How does your workplace measure up? Suggest an Accessibility Audit

  • Do you actively seek to employ People with Disability?
  • Has your workplace ever run any disability awareness training?
  • What Attitudes form barriers to an employee with a disability?
  • Are there any Systems and Laws that limit their involvement?
  • Is your workplace’s Physical Environment accessible? What about the kitchen, coffee machine, and parking, street access?
  • Could a person with a print disability easily read all signs and publications?

How could you be of greater service to colleagues with a disability?

Mental Disability

  • On average, one in five people will experience depression during their lifetimes.
  • How has your organisation responded to employees suffering from mental illness?
  • How could it do better in the future?

Remember to be patient and polite around those with a disability. And if someone discloses their disability to you, keep it confidential.

In Your Social Group

  • Are you a member of a sporting group? Would a person with a disability be easily able to join your team?
  • Do you support charities or volunteer? Do those organisations have people with a disability on their agenda?
  • Do you know anyone with a disability? If not, why not?
  • Put yourself in the shoes of someone with a disability.
  • Think about your own attitudes. How could you make life easier for those with disabilities?
