Rebuilding HOPE
"The need is impossible to ignore"
CBM Ulrike Veismann
After a devastating earthquake destroyed large areas of the city, new estimates show that the disaster may have created 2,000-4,000 or more new amputees.
As the emergency phase in Haiti comes to an end, the massive task of rebuilding begins.
Yet amidst the rubble, CBM is ensuring the needs of persons with disabilities are met.
When the earthquake hit Port-au-Prince on January 12, four-year-old Georgline was trapped under the remains of her home. It took her mother Genese five hours to dig through the ruins and save her daughter’s life.
Unfortunately, the rubble had crushed Georgline’s leg and it was amputated above her knee.
Only weeks after the dramatic surgery, Genese fears for Georglines future,
"She wants to go to school, but she can’t." Says Genese.
But despite the change to their lives, Georgline and her Genese remain grateful and optimistic, knowing that CBM is helping her recover.
"We work in the community every day," says Wilfrid, a CBM community worker.
"We’re helping to change attitudes towards people with disabilities, but it takes time."
There are hundreds of stories like Georgline’s. CBM and our partners remain on the ground encouraging, supporting and providing rehabilitative care for children like Georgline.
With ongoing support from CBM, Georgline can still go to school and look forward to a brighter future.

ACTION PLAN
CBM’s Emergency Response Team is still on the ground and although the frantic search for life is sadly ending, our focus has now shifted to assessing the damage to our projects and working to restore hope to people with disabilities.
Despite the risks, CBM will remain on the ground restoring hope for people with disabilities in decimated Port-au-Prince. In time it will be done, but not without your support.
To help, we faithfully ask for your URGENT and generous donations.
"CBM is appealing to our supporters to DONATE NOW to urgently support our emergency response efforts to reach people with disabilities in the wake of this terrible disaster." - John Jeffries, National Director.

8.8 MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE HITS
CHILE (SOUTH AMERICA)At
5:34 pm (AEDT) on Saturday evening, an earthquake measuring 8.8 on the
Richter scale, struck in the Maule region of Chile, about 300km south
of the capital, Santiago.
More than seven hundred have already been declared dead, with the official number expected to rise.
Aftershocks
continue to rattle the country with alarming regularity - more than 115
have been recorded in the first 30 hours after the quake. A powerful
6.1-magnitude aftershock struck at 8:25am local time yesterday.
So
far Chile is yet to officially accept offers of aid from around the
world, with Foreign Minister Mariano Fernandez insisting that a proper
damage assessment is carried out first.
CBM currently has one project in Chile, located in Concepcion, near the quake epicentre. So far, CBM has not been able to contact those on the ground at the project to ascertain what assistance is required.
As we receive word from our local contacts detailing the assistance required - we will assess our level of response.
We must do all we can to offer support in any way we can.It
is in these times it is important to remember that it is people with
disabilities who are the first to be forgotten and the last to receive
in times of emergency and disaster.
Those wishing to give to CBMs Emergency Response to Haiti can do so:
