Organisations for People with Disabilities take the lead in weathering the COVID-19 storm

The COVID-19 pandemic has been a challenge for local governments, especially in low-socioeconomic countries with fewer resources. In areas like Uttar Pradesh in India, local Organisations for People with Disabilities (OPDs) were able to mobilise to help distribute resources to those who need help.
Sunita is a woman living with a physical disability and a strong voice in her community. She is an OPD leader in Uttar Pradesh state who has been delivering dry ration kits to the 46 most vulnerable households of her village. With the support of CBM and partners, she did this work in accordance with government protocols that kept her and others safe.
Around the world, OPDs like Sunita’s are expanding their work to meet the needs of people with disabilities in their communities. By stepping into this much-needed role, OPDs are gaining visibility within the community and underscoring the exceptional contribution that women like Sunita make every day.
