Responding to the West Sulawesi Earthquake
CBM works hard to be responsive to humanitarian crises when these events occur. Indonesia is currently addressing the global COVID-19 pandemic, and now must rise to yet another challenge. On January 15, a 6.2 magnitude earthquake hit the West Sulawesi province in Indonesia, which left hundreds injured and more than 40,000 people displaced. This is a region of Indonesia where CBM has been working for some time now, and we could respond without delay.
CBM has been glad to support the work of local partners in providing emergency relief to people with disabilities and their families. This has included working with a local organisation for people with disabilities (OPD) to identify the needs of the community and, with the support of this organisation, assisting the community through the provision of much-needed relief equipment and medical supplies. Each family received a temporary shelter package including a tent, tarpaulin, blanket, and garbage bin. Medical care was also provided to those who needed it, including young children and people with disabilities.
