The story of Shukla: A Journey of Strength and Success
Stories | August 1, 2024
Women and girls with disabilities are among the most marginalised groups in the world. In many communities, high levels of stigma and discrimination means they are often excluded from important things like employment, decision-making, and taking on leadership roles. As a result, they are more likely to live in poverty.
Shukla, a single mother of two from Bangladesh, knows this all too well.
Having acquired a disability from a childhood illness, Shukla was often overlooked by people in her community – people who failed to see her full potential. Life was tough for Shukla.
Knowing that she had more to offer than people realised, Shukla decided to get involved in a project supported by CBM Australia, by joining a support group for people with disabilities. She thought that getting involved in the project would be a good way to help her plan for her future and the future of her children.
Upon joining the group, Shukla was able to connect with other people with disabilities who, although have different stories, share similar challenges and a yearning for support.
Through the group, Shukla and her peers gather to discuss issues important to them. It has also enabled Shukla to participate in various training workshops, helping build her skills and confidence. Noticing her potential, Shukla was soon elected group leader – a role that she was both excited and nervous to take on.
Drawing on the skills she had gained through her training, Shukla also decided to start a small business. She took out a loan and brought a cow that gave birth to two calves. After selling one of the calves, she used the profit to open her own business selling food items from a small shop. With hard work and determination, Shukla has paid back her loans in full and is now able to provide for herself and her children. She is happy, content, and is a shining example of what women with disabilities can achieve if given the opportunity.
CBM Australia acknowledges the support of the Australian Government through the Australian NGO Cooperation Program (ANCP) and thanks our implementing partner.
