Lent, Solidarity and Lament

“It’s like I’ve woken up in an alternate universe.”

These words I have said a few times over the last three weeks. Watching the news has felt surreal. The injustice seems immense. I have been deeply grieved.

I’m Stevie Wills, an associate of CBM Australia. During this season of Lent we are reflecting on solidarity; an invitation to lean into solidarity with all people… with all creation. CBM Australia leans into solidarity with people with disabilities who live in poverty. We invite you to join us.

In the Bible in Romans chapter 12 we find a glimpse of solidarity. Romans 12 verse 15 says ‘rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn’. This is Jesus. He grieved with those who grieved. In John chapter 11, we read about Jesus hearing about the death of his friend Lazarus. Despite knowing he would raise Lazarus from the dead, Jesus was deeply moved in spirit and wept with those who were grieving.

I think Jesus continues to weep with those who are weeping – despite knowing that he will one day put an end to crying and pain. As we mourn with those who mourn we draw near to the love, heart, and compassion of Jesus. We are comforted by Jesus and experience his compassion. As he says in Matthew chapter five verse four; ‘Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted’.

As natural disasters, conflicts and climate change continue to have devastating impacts on communities, CBM knows that people with disabilities are disproportionately impacted. Let us lean into solidarity with them in the love and compassion of Jesus.

Pray with us:

Dear Lord Jesus, thank you for your love and compassion for us. Fill us with your love and compassion for people with disabilities who live in poverty. May we lean into solidarity with them and hold them in our hearts.
