A solidarity of love, relationship and sacrifice.
A solidarity that is profound and astounding.
As we draw near to Good Friday, we remember Jesus’ love and sacrifice, poured out on the cross for all people.
During Lent, over the last seven weeks, we have been reflecting on the theme of solidarity. Solidarity is esteeming shared humanity and empathy with others. It is adopting a responsibility for their well-being.
Jesus entered into solidarity with all people. In Hebrews chapter 2 we read that from his throne in heaven, Jesus chose to enter into and experience the fullness of humanity, “made like them, fully human in every way “ (Hebrews 2:17). Jesus is not ashamed to call us brothers and sisters (Hebrews 2:11).
A solidarity that is profound and astounding.
Jesus entered into solidarity with all people to the extent of all-encompassing sacrifice. Hebrews 2:9 says “he suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.”
A solidarity that is profound and astounding.
He tasted death for everyone. A taste of death that dissolved any distinction between people with and without disabilities. A taste of death that nullified any perception of difference between them.
He walks in solidarity with all of us, knowing fully our human experience. Knowing fully the frailty, weaknesses and wounds of humanity. As well as its resilience, capacities and potential. He calls people with disabilities brothers and sisters.
A solidarity that is profound and astounding.
Join with us in prayer:
Lord Jesus, we are amazed at your love. Help us to approach Good Friday in remembrance and honour you. From the depths of our soul, may we dwell in solidarity with all people. May we lean into solidarity with people with disabilities.
Lord Jesus, the solidarity that you entered into with us is profound and astounding. Amen.
